A rose by any other name

Sundays I have never been able to get the hang of (if you got the Arthur Dent reference there you deserve a piece of cake), it's a legacy left by years of 'school tomorrow' malaise; half finished homework, prep and essays, the wait for the Sunday roast, or chilly train journeys back to Uni from visiting home for the weekend. Yet Sunday is a good day to blog.

Being a rainy day sort of girl I ventured out on Wednesday and was soaked to the bone on my charity shopping expedition, can't help but love coming home to a hot shower and change of clothes - all the better if there are pretty spoils to peruse over a steaming cup of Rose Garden tea. Two of my favourite finds this week were of a rosy persuasion; a vintage beaded necklace and a 1970s copy of Roses in Colour - totally wild about the brilliantly retro photography and illustrations.

Burning a tealight or two on a gloomy day is a happymaking thing, I like to use vintage shot glasses or desert bowls although on occasion the charity shops will yield a super cheap tealight holder for a few pence and I'll bring that home too - the clear, faceted glass on this one is extra-twinkly. Anyone who knows me well would agree I'm not a very pink person, though it seems there's an exception to this when it comes to pressed glass trinket dishes - who knew! It looked nice enough holding my super thrifty rose beads but I think I prefer it turned upside down as a stand for my 20p miniature teapot.

T's Dad Nick visited bearing gifts of a pair of vintage cameras found at a car boot sale, I couldn't thank him enough as they are beautiful, clearly the man has eagle eyes and thrifty skills! The old camera collection is ever expanding so I've been housing them all around the house on windowsills and bookshelves.

Hope you have all been having a lovely weekend,

  2. I too am a victim of the 'Sunday Blues' often set off by the sound of various neighbours in the hood, mowing their lawns in the afternoon. It is exactly as you described. I often try to alleviate it by playing some good music loud enough to sing along too. It has improved somewhat over time though and yes, I agree writing on ones blog helps quite alot. I was also contributing to a 'Photography Scavenger Hunt' which I must revive. I love the 'Roses' book you thrifted and That Camera... drool. How Lovely. Thankyou for showing us.

  11. That is one pretty old retro book - love looking at old photograph books like that. Our library is lucky filled with them so I can take them home and pretend they are mine for a couple of weeks!

  17. so pretty! i love the tea light holder. i like to use tiny delicate teacups to hold my tea lights, that can look really pretty too. and sunday blues are the worst, i think it's knowing that you've got five full days before you can really relax again...

  18. Jem you always hunt out the most glorious things, and of course beautifully photographed/arranged. It's funny how finds share themselves with one and other, I do have a lot of love for an English rose.

p.s Thank you as always for your wise words on my last post, sometimes a little bit of insight is all I need to bring me back down to earth again xxx

  19. Oh Jem, you know me and my love of plastic granny beads so you'll know I swooned slightly at those lovely rose-shaped ones. I love stuff of the rosy persuasion too so I can see why you grabbed the book.

Wonderful photos too - you are skilled lady!!!

  21. Some Douglas Adams philosophy would do well for my Sundays too - come home from a rainy dog walk to your trusty towel, and when it comes to thoughts of Monday morning DON'T PANIC (in large, friendly letters).
Such gorgeous items as ever, I particularly ogled the necklace and the pressed glass trinket dish; let's just say that I'm getting overly enthusiastic about hunting glass out myself. x

  23. These photographs just keep getting better. I swear you could pick up some tat from Home Bargains and make it look dreamy and luxurious!
Please can we have a little sneaky peak of the nooks and crannies in your home like you did once before? I'd love a little nosey around - you arrange things so beautifully.
